London Underground
In eighteen sixty-three, a railway was begun
The world's first underground, connecting everyone
From Paddington to Farringdon, the Metropolitan
Was opened with a fanfare and a lot of steam and sweat
The District line soon followed, and the Circle was complete
The people of the city could commute with ease and speed
But deeper down below the ground, another plan was made
To tunnel through the clay and rock, and use electric trains
The City and South London was the first of its kind
A tube line running under Thames, a marvel of design
And then came more additions, like the Central and the Piccadilly
The Bakerloo and Northern, and the Waterloo and City
The Underground Electric Railways Company was formed
To unify the network and to electrify them all
They also introduced a logo that we all know and love
The roundel and the name "Underground" were signs from above
And so the Tube kept growing, through the wars and peace and strife
It carried people, goods and art, it saved so many lives
It faced some challenges and changes, but it always persevered
It's still the pride of London, after one hundred sixty years!
